The branch of information geometry began actively in the 1980's with the work of Professor Shun-Ichi Amari who took the stance of differential geometry for analyzing differential probabibility manifolds (of the exp./mixture families).

The key to understand that line of work is the notion of connections linking the tangent vector spaces. As usual, wikipedia does a good job, recalling that notion:
