Renyi entropy as an image quality metric?

Post @ 11:25:30 | Renyi

Recently, my colleage Dr Qi Zhang attended some conference on visual perception. During her trip report, she mentionned one poster of the 30th ECVP (European conference on Visual Perception) that gained my attention:

Generalized Renyi entropy as new image quality metric.

The authors defined as an entropy measure for assessing the image quality. They perform experiments on lossy compressed (JPEG) and blurred image, and could assess that their histogram Renyi-like entropy is maximized for the groundtruth untouched image.

It is important to be able to characterize natural images (gradient have a very particular distribution in natural pictures) and be able to "measure" quantitatively" the subjective image quality.

One definite work in that direction, but who can claims a universal absolute measure for this goal ?
